They can garnish your wages (take money out of your check before you even get it), prevent you from ever getting a loan, credit card, or payday advance, and yes, send you to jail.
You can’t go to jail for owing money, but you can go to jail for writing fraudulent checks.
Payday loans usually make you write them a check. You cannot go to jail simply for owing somebody money. But, writting a bad check is a criminal offence potentially punishable by jail time.
