Contact your local Red Cross for a referral to the Consumer Credit Counseling Services (CCCS) in your area. FYI: The best they can do is negotiate lower (or even no) interest rates…They do not negotiate settlements. Do not use any service you see advertised on cable TV.

If you plan to make a major purchase (car, mortgage) or if you plan to apply for a new lease on an apartment, it’s important to know what entering into a debt management/counseling program will be noted on your credit file….This will greatly affect your ability to get new credit….But then that’s the whole point of going into debt management…to make sure that you do not incur more debt.

There is an organization that is specifically for credit counseling services… NFCC.ORG. Check them out!
