How do I find out if a Payday loan company is using illegal practices?
I took out a payday loan and I do need to repay it. However, I don’t think this company is using legal debt collection practices. I have asked them for the documents regarding the loan, license number, company name, physical address, etc….I get nothing in response but rude and snotty emails. I have now asked them to stop emailing me at work. What should I do next? I am not arguing paying the loan, but I want to see the documents so I know what the fees were.
It’s legal loan sharking. Stay away from those places. Those people are the scum of the scum!
This website may help.
Call your state attorney generals office, they are in the phone book, or on the net. They will have the info you desire. Look under the consumer protection department.
Call the office of the Attorney General of your state. They should be able to assist you.
Most state Attorneys General have a division that deals with these loan outfits. Contact them and see if you can get some information. Secondly, do all of your requests in writing and send them through Certified(?) Mail so you get a receipt when they receive it and always ask for a reply within a reasonable time frame. If they ignore your written requests that provides you with more ammunition for the AG.
Now, have you learned anything about these people? They are preying on the misfortunate and desperate and they are pretty aggressive about getting paid.
You didn’t get that stuff when you signed the papers agreeing to the terms of the loan? You had to agree to get the money, there is no way you got a loan from them and said “You know, I don’t agree with your method of repayment but I’ll worry about it later…” No way.
They should have sent you documents to sign electronically. Those documents should state the cost and the fees. Just pay it and be done with them. Never, ever use them again.
You have just encountered the legal scum of the earth.
When you took the loan you had to agree to their terms and fees to do it - and I can guarentee they were astronimical, ridiculous and barely inside the realm of legal, but you agreed no less.
Contact you Attorney General’s office to make sure they are on the right side of legal and repay these people as soon as possible.
Then stay as far away from them as possible! Ever wonder why you don’t see these places in affluent neighborhoods? Because they prey on people in distress like vultures on a carcass. People who are so desperate to for the money they overlook the outrageous fees and interest just to get the money.
