Now that she is a mother and working only part time it will take all of her working life to pay off that debt. A part time job which I hated, working all holidays and a loan got me by during my student years. The parental income threshold for student allowances stayed the same for years at something like $25,000 per year, so less and less students were eligible for this help and instead had to rely on the loan. I find it disgusting that an 18 year old can leave school and go on the dole no questions asked, but if they choose to go to University (which prevents them from working full time) they first must have thier parents income assessed and if the income is more than the ridiculously low threshold they are not entitled to any benefits whatsoever. I spent 4 years studying full time and working 24 hours a week plus getting $150 a week on my student loan. Learn more
