Aledo City Council grouses over TIF - Aledo Times Record- How Does Money Lending Interest Work
There were more than a few hot buttons pushed Monday night, May 19, in Aledo at the regular Aledo City Council meeting. Some of the issues Aledo needs to think about and resolve are developing new housing, attracting new business and coordinating the city, county, Aledo Main Street and Aledo Area Chamber of Commerce. Alderman Don Zook said he was concerned about involving another organization into looking at what was happening with Aledo, saying the city is already a member of the Quad City Development Group, Bi-State and has just hired an economic development person for the area. The mayor asked the council to take a look at the literature proposed by Vandewalle and Associates and make a decision at the next city council meeting. In part the letter stated that City Attorney Mark Walton had researched the matter and given the opinion that council members who own property within a TIF district should not vote on matters pertaining to the TIF district or be involved in further official matters. At the previous council meeting the council was asked to consider a TIF project and members decided by consensus that each member would follow his conscience in deciding whether or not to vote.
