The company I worked for fired me after just 3 days and kept $70 out of my paycheck?
I worked for a payday loan office for 3 days. On my second day, the manager started letting me be “hands on.” I processed most of the transactions while she watched. We shared the same register all day. When it got real busy and when it was time for my lunch, she took over. At the end of the day, the register was $70.00 short. We both got written up because it could not be determined who was at fault. She explained to me that mistakes do happen, especially during training and to just take my time and be more careful. The next day, I almost gave a customer back $100 too much, but I caught my mistake by triple checking myself before giving the cash back. At the end of the day she told me that it she didn’t think that it was going to work out for me. Now, I get my paystub and they are withholding the $70.00 from my paycheck! Is any of this legal?
Sounds like all of it is legal. You would have to look at their company policy handbook. They can fire you for any reason–there is nothing you can do about that. If the money is bother you then go talk to the manager about it, but it will not get you your job back.
What did you sign when you took the job??? You probably signed a statement, agreeeing to reimburse the company for any shortages.
No, that’s illegal. Both of you shared the cash register and even she agreed that it couldn’t be determined who was at fault. For all you know, she could have helped herself and used you as a scapegoat. They cannot withhold your pay for the money. They would have to sue you for the money. Contact the labor board in your town and see what they have to say. You are entitled for the 3 days of work at your regular pay. Be glad you don’t have to work there anymore. I would hate to have to worry about the register or working for a place who can accuse you and take money from your check.
not legal . If you were both written up then the most that you should be responsible for is $35 , half of the 70. If two of you were using the register they cant prove who the shortage was from. I would protest it and contact a lawyer for advice .
What state do you live in? In some states they have to give you a very early notice otherwise they owe you a couple weeks of pay infact.
