Check 'n Go under fire - Cincinnati Enquirer- About: Cash Before Payday


WASHINGTON - Three former employees of Mason-based Check ‘n Go, a payday lender with nearly 1,500 stores nationwide, spoke out against the company’s business practices Tuesday, saying it takes advantage of its customers. Donovan, who resigned from Check ‘n Go on Tuesday, described a system in which the company encouraged its employees to recruit low- income and minority customers, then keep them from paying off their loans and instead borrow more money. City Council, Washington resident Stacey Brown told reporters that he borrowed $500 in a payday loan from Check ‘n Go in 2001. William Harrod, a former store manager for Check ‘n Go, said because he is black, he was told to go to low-income apartment complexes with black occupants and encourage apartment managers to refer their tenants to his store. In a statement, Check ‘n Go called the three former employees who spoke out “disgruntled” and said the individuals made “false and reckless statements regarding the business practices of Check ‘n Go.
