Bank of America screwed me with its damn \”debit\” card. Can I get my money back?

These idiots overdrew my account, by allowing a charge that I made 6 days earlier, to go through..AFTER I had just previously withdrew from my checking, leaving only 1 dollar in. So basically after having left 1 dollar in my checking,…these dolts THEN allow a charge from daaays ago of $15 to go thorugh!! WTH? And apparantly this happened on Tuesday.

So today is payday, I look at my checking, and $68 dollars is taken from my hard earned cash, because they charged me 2 days of being in the negative…WHICH THEY CAUSED!!!

It says debit on the card…not credit. The charge that sends my account into the negative, was charged 6 days before they decided to deduct it from my account. If there was only $1 in my account why did they allow the deduction? Especially since it should have been done almost a full week prior?

Can I get my 68 bucks back? I used to have Commerce bank, and their Debit card for 2 years,…and this never EVER happened.
Ok, for those who are saying otherwise, yes I understand what your saying…basically keep track of your own expenditures, like your jottingdown notes for a pop quiz…fine.

But then..WHAT IN THE HELL is the purpose of the Atm?? It’s telling me I have money I dont have! If they have an internal message that I made that particular purchase, wether or not it went through..then they KNOW that it exits, yet and still the ATM reflects a fraudulent amount. Its trickery.

When I go to an ATM and select show checking account funds…THEY ARE LYING!

And no that charge that sent it over was not signed for like a credit card.

And shock exists because, when I used Commerce Bank, I had a Debit, and it only took what I had, it did not allow charges to put you in the negative, and if you did’nt have enough, the charge would’nt go through. Simple. THAT’S what I call DEBIT.

Im going to have to go back to them.

If the charge was made by you, you should have made sure there was enough in the account to cover it. Just because it took them a few days to debit your account does not make it their fault that you were overdrawn.

You should have entered the charge in your register when you made it. Then you wouldn’t have made the additional withdrawl that caused you to be overdrawn.

Sorry, this is your fault; not the bank’s.

Yes you can! Call up customer service explain the situation and if you get angry and ask to speak with the manager then they should credit your account. Just explain to them that it was their fault…and be persistent, don’t take no for an answer…Good Luck

Most banks offer a courtesy reversal if your account meets their guidelines but don’t count on it because most of their guidelines includes a minimum daily balance of 1000 dollars or more.

Bottom line is, you as the customer, are responsible to only spend what you put in there. If you only put 20 bucks in and you spend 30, the bank has the right to charge fees.

You wouldnt be mad at your wallet if it didnt have enough to cover your charges so you cant be mad at your bank.

Yeah, BoA does suck. If the purchase was charged as a credit and not a debit (which you can do on your debit card), then sometimes it can take up to a week for it to be removed from your account.

Usually though as I have BoA, pending transactions (things that have been charged but not yet debited from your account) are counted into your balance, so even if the money hasn’t been debited yet, they will still show your balance as if it had been.

Their customer service isn’t that terrible but I don’t know whether you can do anything. If there is one thing Bunk of America loves, it’s overdraft fees. You can try calling someone and seeing if they can waive the fee, I know it’s been done. My friend got into a mess with them and they ended up charging her like 5 overdraft fees and she was able to negotiate it down to one fee and she had the places where she used her card, credit the money back into her account and she paid them in cash. Good luck!

Call the Bank, or better yet, go to the Bank and they will
tell you what you did wrong. If they were wrong, they will correct the error.

The Bank is where to get the answers, not this forum.

I am afraid not. I recently had a similar situation. My bank has overdraft protection in which they will pay up to $500 in overdrafts but they then charge $35 for every one they pay. I had enough money in my account to pay for the debits that were to come out. I made a deposit on Monday to cover my power bill that i paid online on a Monday. On Tuesday they put all of my debits in pending status, took out the power bill which was more than what I had in the bank before the deposit, therefore throwing it into overdraft. Then they took out the other 6 debits, then credited my deposit on Wednesday. They charged me $35 each for 7 overdraft transactions. Resulting in $245 in overdraft fees. To top it off, before I got my next paycheck to make a deposit to cover these fees, they took out my monthly service charge of $19.95 and charged me another $35 overdraft fee. Then returned another automatic payment because of insufficent funds, charged me another $35 for the return but paid a $5.00 processing fee from my creditor and charged me another $35. Now my creditor has charged me a return check fee of $35. The bank says they do not intentionally hold debits in pending staus hoping that a larger one will come thru first, I think they are lying. They refused to credit anything back to my account. Bottom line, I ended up with $350 in charges including the one from my creditor not to mention the $5.00 and the monthly service charge. People beware of pending transactions on your bank account. I truly believe the banks are using this as a way to screw people out of money.

Your out of the money unfortunately. Even if it were there fault B of A wouldn’t reimburse. There in serious trouble with the Federal Trade Commission.

It’s highly unlikely that you will get your money back because actually in all fairness they didn’t do anything wrong really, because the money you withdrew should have already been accounted for on your end, because technically if they had taken the money out that same day then you wouldn’t have been able to withdraw the funds that you did because you wouldn’t have had enough in your account . Also if you made the purchase with your debit card and signed rather than entered your pin the transaction is treated as a “credit purchase” and can take 3-5 days before it appears on your account ..

I used to work for BOA, in customer service, and got this question all the time. First, don’t ever go by the balance the ATM gives you. Most of the time it isn’t accurate because it doesn’t reflect all of your pending transactions. Secondly, the whole six day thing is not BOA’s fault. I would tell you if it was and its not. That one would fall back to the merchant where you did the transaction. More than likely, at the actual time you did the transaction, the funds were in your account, hence why it went through. In those six days though, if you spend those funds, that is how you get overdraft fees. Another thing to remember is that they post in order from largest to smallest, so technically if you had $15 and did two transactions, one for $13 and one for $23, even though if you had enough for the $13 charge, you would still get two overdraft fees. They are a good bank, if you know how to use them. Unfortunately, the only way to learn is situations like this, and working there of course. Hope it helps.
